LGBT books challenge

Hi everyone! I was talking with a debut author recently about LGBT books and then suddenly it hit me: I need to do an LGBTQIA Books Reading Challenge. There are so many amazing books out there that fall under this umbrella. By now, I’m sure you guys know what a fierce supporter of LGBTQIA books I am, and it was only a matter of time that I thought of this. Shortly after I posted about this idea on Twitter, my awesome co-blogger, Bekka, threw her support behind it and that’s when I knew I had to do this.

  • This challenge will run from January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2016.
  • The book must contain an LGBTQIA main character.
  • Books must be read and reviewed. The review can be any kind of review you want, traditional, a few sentences, a vlog review. Anything goes.
  • Backlist books also count as part of this challenge.
  • There are going to be different levels that correspond to the colors of the rainbow:
    • Red = 5 books
    • Orange = 6-12 books
    • Yellow = 13-20 books
    • Green = 21- 30 books
    • Blue = 31- 40 books
    • Purple = 41- 50 books
  • The Giveaway will be for one LGBTQIA book. International is okay, but you MUST be signed up for the challenge. The giveaway will be held at the end of the year.
  • To sign up, just leave the link to your blog or Goodreads in the linky below!

  1. This is great idea!!

Quick question: I’m planning on mostly posting my reviews to my blog but I might have a few posted on goodreads (shorter ones that I don’t think are worth making a post post out of). Is that okay? Or would it be easier for you, if I posted all my reviews on my blog?

  2. Yay, I’m happy to find an LGBT+ Challenge. My blog Let’s Get Beyond Tolerance is all about LGBT+ news and entertainment (with a big focus on books, because I love to read). If you need any help with this challenge, please do let me know! I’ll have to see about signing up since I’ll be reading and reviewing these books anyway. πŸ™‚

  3. Hi there πŸ™‚ I was wondering what you would count as an LGBTQIA book. For example if a main character in a book is not revealed to be LGBTQIA until later in a series, would the earlier books in that series count as part of this challenge?

    • No they would not. For the series to count, a character has to identify themselves as LGBTQIA in the first book. Even if they aren’t out yet, self identification counts.

  4. Hi – I specifically focus on LGBTQIA content over on my blog, so I was wondering if it would be okay to join the reading challenge? (and not cheat-y.) Although last year I read something like 30 books and only wrote 12 reviews so it would be really good incentive. And I’ve never joined a reading challenge before, which I’ve heard is a Thing To Do. I don’t know, thoughts?

  5. Small question: is the challenge only for fiction? Or do nonfiction books about the LGBTQIA experience, say a history of Stonewall, count as well for the challenge?

  6. I’m a nit! I accidentally posted a link to a February review here instead of the February catch-up thread (I’ve now posted it there where it belongs) – sorry for making a mess!
