Epic Recs (2)

Epic Recs is a recommendations based book club started by Amber and Judith where each month you pick a book for your partner to read.

In June Lili and I decided to resurrect this book club and our opening books were Caraval for Lili and Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day for me. I ended up really enjoying this short story by Seanan McGuire, though I did feel it could have been a full length novel and have been better for it. For all my thoughts, click on over to my review!

Here is what Lili had to say about Caraval: Before I begin, I want to note that I am an employee of Macmillan under the Tor Books imprint, though this does not affect my opinions or views. Unfortunately, this book is not what I wanted it to be, and I think I can partially blame that on the hype machine. I don’t know exactly what I thought I’d be getting into, but this wasn’t it. So many people talk about the magic that this world brings, and it was lost on me completely overshadowed by an annoying heroine that complained a lot. Julian, the inadvertent partner in this crazy game, is ten times more interesting and compelling to me. Will I read book two? Yes. Will I go in a bit hesitantly? Yes. Overall, am I glad I read this and understand why Bekka rec’d it to me? Completely. But did I like it? Unfortunately, eh.

I’m sad Lili didn’t like it as much as I thought she would, but I am glad to report that she loved Julian so that’s a mini-win for me.

Here are the books we’ll be reading for the August-September round of Epic Recs:

Lili says: THIS IS SO EXCITING I PICKED A BOOK BEKKA KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT! I picked this book up back in March and immediately fell in love with the world. This is a story about being different, the wonders of magic, and discovering oneself and just what you are capable of. Perfect for middle grade readers and fantasy lovers of all ages, I cannot recommend this one enough. It is so deserving of its Newberry win. Everyone needs to meet Luna, Glerk, and Fyrian because this cast of characters is super silly and unforgettable. Plus, look at that unbelievably beautiful cover!

My thoughts: I had just finished reading Queens of Geek when it was time to pick a new rec and I knew this had to be it. It’s so much fun, an open hearted love letter to fandom, with two great romances and tons of beautifully done representation. I love that Lili doesn’t really know anything about this so she can go into it blind and be swept away by the magic, the fun, the humor, and the friendship. Hopefully this round will be a win for me!
