mid year book freak out

I was tagged by my friend Denise from Dandelionn Wine Reviews to do the Mid-Year Book Freakout. I love doing tags, as you all know, so I’m excited to jump into this one! I’m about 6 books behind on my Goodreads challenge at the time of writing this, clocking in just 48 books read out of the 100 I plan to read.

1. best book you’ve read so far in 2015

black iris

I read Black Iris by Leah Raeder back in mid-March and it’s still the best book I’ve read this year. It’s one of my all-time favorites, honestly. The protagonist, while very different from me in a lot of ways, was also too much like me that it hurt sometimes. This book cracked me open and I still haven’t recovered.

2. the best sequel you’ve read so far in 2015

demonglass

I read the Hex Hall trilogy in less than a week after getting the first book as my Epic Rec from Lili. I love this trilogy a whole lot more than I ever though I would, and Demonglass is my favorite of the three. All about the torture ship.

3. new release you haven’t read yet

heart of betrayal

I had an ARC of The Heart of Betrayal a while back, but I gave it away because I couldn’t get into it. Fast forward a few months, and I buy a copy immediately after it’s released. I’ve heard that a lot of my theories come true in this book so I neeed to read it!

4. most anticipated release for late-2015

queen of shadows

As if you even had to ask.

5. biggest disappointment

acotar

In an unexpected twist of events, I present to you an Ugh of Ugh and Ughs. I cannot believe this book and Heir of Fire were written by the same person. I hated everything about ACOTAR, from the writing, the main character, the “romance” and just literally everything. I am SO angry and disappointed and it gets worse every time I think about it.

6. biggest surprise

hex hall

I have no idea why Lili thought I would like this, but she was totally right! This series was so much fun, the romance was perfect, the characters were lovable. It was laugh-out-loud funny. I can’t believe I waited this long to read it.

7. favorite new author

21853636

It’s a damn shame that I waited until this year to finally read a Courtney Summers book. I tried in the past to read This is Not a Test but found it too triggering. But her contemporary release, All the Rage was perfect. I need to read her others, and I even own What Goes Around.

8. newest fictional crush

A Darker Shade final for Irene

So I haven’t actually finished ADSOM yet but I’m gonna go with everyone from ADSOM. Gimme all of the characters. Kell, Lila, Rhy, Holland EVERYONE.

9. newest favorite character

not otherwise specified

This was a hard one, but I have to go with Etta from Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz. Never have I read a book with such a strong sense of voice. Etta is 1000000% Etta and nobody else. I felt so connected to her struggles with eating disorders and not having your bisexuality validated by those around you. This book was so good and we need more l/b/p young women of color leading our YA books.

10. a book that made you cry

saving francesca

I actually reread Jellicoe Road this year and that made me cry way harder than SF did, but since it was a reread, I decided to give the spot to Frankie. God, I loved this book so much. Melina Marchetta just has this way with characters and taking these enormous emotions and pulling them into small, little books. Like how can I feel this much about a few characters that I’ve known for less than 250 pages? It’s just the Marchetta way. I can’t explain it.

11. a book that made you happy

under the lights

Obviously! Much squeeing, much giggling, much rolling around on the floor from the straight up CUTENESS of the ship! Bri/Van is the ultimate adorable, swoony, head-over-heels romance that you all need to read immediately. You will not stop smiling.

12. favorite adaptation you saw this year

The only film adaptation I think I’ve seen this year was 50 Shades and I refuse to list that as my favorite anything unless it’s favorite train wreck.

13. favorite post you’ve done so far

I make it a point to love every post I put up on here, but my ultimate fave (aside from Bookish Bingo) is my ARC Envy post. I think no matter when you read it, it’s still valid. Check it out.

14. most beautiful book you bought this year

I have purchased So. Many. books this year, it’d be impossible to comb through them and decide which one was the prettiest. So I’m going with a recent purchase: The Adventure Collection box set.

the adventure collection

15. what books do you need to read before the end of the year?

Oh god so many! I want to read a bunch of series including: the Black Dagger Brotherhood, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I have a bunch of ARCs I’d love to get to soon, like Hunter and Six of Crows and Truthwitch. And let’s not forget a bunch of late-2015 sequels like Winter and Queen of Shadows.

  1. I really need to find time to read Not Otherwise Specified. Right now though I’m busy reading and fangirling over Aquaman. So. lol. And I am waiting on my library to purchase Dahlia’s YA books, I really NEED to read them but I can’t afford to buy them. 🙁 Good post though I’m glad you did this one! 😀
